Ozone Depleting Substances Test

Accredited Ozone Depleting Substances Test for Regulatory Compliance

Quality Calibration Solutions (QCS) provides accredited, laboratory-based testing for Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS), a critical service for ensuring global regulatory compliance and protecting the environment. Our precise analytical services are essential for manufacturers, importers, and service technicians who must verify that their products and materials are free from banned chemicals like CFCs and HCFCs. By delivering definitive, legally defensible data, we help you navigate complex environmental laws, avoid costly penalties, and uphold your commitment to sustainability.

Our commitment to accuracy is demonstrated by our adherence to ISO/IEC 17025 standards, alignment with EPA methodologies, and full support for Montreal Protocol compliance.

Why is Accurate Ozone Depleting Substances Testing Critical?

The global phase-out of ODS under the Montreal Protocol is one of history’s greatest environmental success stories. However, vigilance through testing remains crucial. Illicit trade, cross-contamination, and the management of legacy equipment make accurate ODS testing an indispensable component of modern industrial and commercial operations.

Visual Health & Safety.

The stratospheric ozone layer is Earth’s primary shield against harmful ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation. Ozone Depleting Substances, most notably chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons, migrate to the stratosphere where they catalytically destroy ozone molecules, leading to increased UV radiation at the surface. This contributes to higher rates of skin cancer, cataracts, and ecosystem damage. The Montreal Protocol is a global treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of these substances. Accurate testing is the only way to enforce this treaty, verify compliance, and contribute to the ongoing healing of the ozone layer.

Guaranteeing Product & Equipment Compliance

For countless businesses, compliance is a prerequisite for market access. Manufacturers of HVACR systems, automotive air conditioners, aerosol products, and fire suppression equipment must guarantee their products do not contain banned ODS. Importers face the risk of customs seizures, fines, and mandatory re-export of goods if their products are found to contain even trace amounts of controlled substances. ODS testing provides the certified proof needed to validate supply chains, confirm the purity of reclaimed refrigerants, and ensure that finished goods meet all legal requirements.

Meeting Strict Regulatory Reporting

Companies that produce, import, export, or destroy ODS are required by law to report their activities to national authorities, such as the EPA in the United States. This reporting relies on precise, quantitative data. Inaccurate or incomplete data can lead to regulatory scrutiny, audits, and penalties. Professional ODS testing provides the high-integrity, traceable data required for accurate and defensible reporting, ensuring you remain in good standing with all regulatory bodies.

Reducing Business Risk and Avoiding Penalties

Non-compliance with ODS regulations carries severe consequences. Fines for violations can run into the millions of dollars, and the reputational damage from being associated with environmentally harmful practices can be irreversible. Proactive ODS testing is a powerful risk mitigation strategy. It serves as a due diligence defense, protects your brand’s reputation, prevents costly product recalls or import holds, and insulates your business from the significant financial and legal liabilities of non-compliance.

Our Advanced ODS Testing Capabilities

QCS utilizes cutting-edge analytical chemistry techniques and instrumentation to provide definitive identification and quantification of controlled substances, even at trace levels.

Types of Substances & Products We Test:

Our laboratories are equipped to analyze a wide array of samples for the presence of numerous controlled chemicals. We test:

  • Substance Classes:
    • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), e.g., R-11, R-12, R-113
    • Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), e.g., R-22, R-123
    • Halons (used in fire suppression), e.g., Halon 1211, Halon 1301
    • Carbon Tetrachloride & Methyl Chloroform (solvents)
    • Methyl Bromide (fumigant)
  • Products and Materials:
    • Refrigerant gases (virgin and reclaimed)
    • Foam blowing agents and pre-polymer systems
    • Solvents and cleaning agents
    • Fire suppression agents
    • Aerosol propellants

Our Advanced Testing Process and Standards:

Our core analytical methodology is Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), the gold standard for volatile organic compound analysis and the technique specified in official EPA methods (e.g., EPA Method 18). This powerful technique separates complex chemical mixtures and provides a unique “fingerprint” for each compound, allowing for unambiguous identification and precise quantification.

Our standardized laboratory process includes:

  1. Sample Logging & Preparation: Secure chain-of-custody documentation and preparation of the sample in a controlled environment to prevent contamination.
  2. Instrument Calibration: Multi-point calibration using Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) to ensure quantitative accuracy.
  3. GC-MS Analysis: The sample is injected into the GC-MS system for separation and identification against our extensive spectral library of ODS.
  4. Data Review & Quantification: Results are reviewed by a senior chemist to confirm identification and calculate the concentration of any detected ODS in parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb).

Certificate Generation: A formal Certificate of Analysis is issued detailing the methods, results, and regulatory context.

Flexible Service Delivery: On-Site Sampling and In-Lab Analysis:

To ensure the highest quality results, we offer a two-part service model:

  • On-Site Sampling Support: We provide specialized sample collection kits (e.g., passivated canisters, gas cylinders) and detailed instructions to help your team collect representative samples directly from equipment, storage tanks, or production lines, minimizing the risk of contamination.

Accredited In-Lab Analysis: Once collected, samples are shipped to our climate-controlled, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory for analysis. This controlled setting ensures that all analytical work is performed under optimal conditions with fully calibrated equipment for maximum precision and accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions about ODS Testing

What are Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS)?
  • ODS are chemicals that destroy the stratospheric ozone layer. The most common classes are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform. They were historically used as refrigerants, solvents, foam blowing agents, and fire suppressants.
Why do I need to test for ODS if they are already phased out?

Testing remains critical for several reasons: to combat illegal imports and counterfeit products; to verify the purity of stockpiled or reclaimed refrigerants; to ensure imported equipment doesn’t contain residual ODS; and to manage legacy systems that still operate on these chemicals, ensuring no harmful venting occurs.

What is the difference between an ODS test and a standard refrigerant identifier?

The ratio between the accuracy of the reference equipment and that of the equipment under calibration should be at least 4:1.

A customer may choose to calibrate themselves or send their equipment to one of our calibration and service centers. We do not require the customer to return the equipment to Hioki to be calibrated but there are advantages to doing so, namely, we also have the capability to repair and adjust the equipment to ensure it is operating optimally for the customer. This is part of the total after service support we offer our customers. Hioki has five such calibration and service centers globally,

Can you test for ODS substitutes like HFCs?

Yes. While Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are not ozone-depleting, they are potent greenhouse gases regulated under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Our GC-MS methods are fully capable of identifying and quantifying HFCs (e.g., R-134a, R-404A, R-410A) to help companies manage their obligations under these evolving climate regulations.
